My Story

Esther Awovi Akafia

It's a Tuesday afternoon in Accra, Ghana and I am a Corporate Attorney for a financial institution holding board meetings in a 5-star hotel with board members from all over the world. As we wrap up, in walks the cleaning crew. My eyes lock with one of them and I quickly realize that she is a former classmate of mine, Serwaa, from elementary school. I am shocked and sad at the same time to see her in this position. Serwaa quickly looks away and I recall how though she showed promise back then, her mother could not afford extra tutoring to supplement the not so good education we received in our school. The tutoring I got enabled me to go on to continue my education at one of the premiere institutions in Ghana and changed my life's trajectory. Imagine if Serwaa had gotten access to good quality education the way I did. She could have been the one holding the board meetings instead of cleaning up after it. As i’ve travelled globally and particularly in Africa, I’ve seen first-hand how lack of access to education affects individuals, communities and nations. When we give children the opportunity to be educated, we give our world a sprint towards the solutions of its problems. I’m involved with Pioneers Education Foundation because I want to be part of the people who create that sprint.
